ELLEN SINOPOLI founded the Ellen Sinopoli Dance Company in 1991, after settling in the Capital Region from Boston and NYC. As the Artistic Director of ESDC, the resident company at The Egg Center for the Performing Arts in Albany NY, Sinopoli has choreographed 80 new works and has received choreographic commissions from The Arts Center of the Capital Region, The Egg, Olana Partnership, St. Cecilia Orchestra, Saratoga City Ballet, The Arts Center, Schenectady Museum, Schenectady Symphony Orchestra, UAlbany and Union College.
Collaborations have always been an integral part of her choreographic vision. Whether through chance encounters or direct solicitation by other artists, Sinopoli has had the honor to work with over 25 artists from a variety of genres including mixed media, spoken word, music composition, sculptors and architectural design. Her dance continues to be driven by the extraordinary artistic energies and talents of such artists. “Whether it is an arresting ceramic, a photography book of stunningly carved seats from Africa, the haunting story behind the movie, “The Secret of the Roan Inish”, the brilliant performance of jazz musician Dave Douglas or the cloth paintings on the studio walls of the Kaatsbaan International Dance Center, the embryonic seeds are always there – just as long as I keep my eyes open and my body aware.”
Beyond her role as artistic director and choreographer, Ellen Sinopoli is also noted for her talents as a master teacher and for her efforts to educate young people about dance. She is Coordinator of Dance Programming at Russell Sage College. She has taught at Siena College, Skidmore College, Union College, Albany Berkshire Ballet, Saratoga City Ballet and Guilderland Ballet, among others.
In 2016 Ellen was one of thirteen women featured in the Time Union’s Women@Work magazine highlighting women in the arts. She has appeared on "Schenectady Today" and WMHT's Local Artist interviews for PBS' Fall Arts Festival, WMHT's "Our Town Troy" and WAMC’s Roundtable. In 2002, she received the “Educator of Excellence” award from WTEN, an affiliate of ABC. She was one of the 100 “Women of Excellence” honored by the Albany-Colonie Regional Chamber of Commerce in 2000 and was a recipient of the 2000 Arts Awards from the Albany/ Schenectady League of Arts in the Capital Region of NYS.
